In November 1968 Naomi Simms was the first ever African American model to appear on the cover of Ladies home journal, at the time the leading magazine for women.
She later turned down a role in the movie Cleopatra Jones because she was appalled at the racism towards the black characters (the original Egyptians) in the script.
Credit also is due to Wilhelmina Cooper and her agency which was the catalyst in getting Sims work.
Without these women opening doors where would models of colour be today?
