Black History Month: Pearl Bailey

Pearl Mae Bailey March 29 1918- August 17 1990

Was a big band era singer and actress whose career spanned over 40 years. Born in 1918 Newport News Virginia, she begun performing from the age of three as a singer in her fathers church choir.

Her entry into show business came at age 15 when she won an amateur talent contest at the Pearl theatre.
During the 1970’s she had her own television show she provided voices for Disney and the fox hound. She was appointed by a President Richard Nixon as America’s Ambassador of Love.

Seth MacFarlane creator of televisions Family Guy and American Dad paid tribute to Pearl Bailey in American Dad where the high school that Steve Smith Attends is called Pearl Bailey High School.
