Vogue Netherlands has stirred a very sensitive black face debate using model Querelle Jansen, and stylist Marije Goekoop. Both the stylist and photographer are frequent contributors to the magazine.
The spread was in honour of Marc Jacobs work for Louis Vuitton, which took inspiration from black beauty icons Grace Jones and Josephine Baker. Rather than hire a black model some editors use a “blackface.” An obvious shun of a race but labelled as creativity.
This is not the first time a magazine has refused to accept models of colour. French fashion magazine Numero decided to celebrate African beauty in its March issue complete with its featured model titled “African Queen.” The model used in fact was a white girl with a black face; it sends a message that the magazine is happy to celebrate African beauty just without any Africans.
